Early Medieval Designs covers the thousand years between 400 and 1200 AD. The patterns and designs are arranged thematically, bringing together the most important groups of patterns, such as interlace, spirals and scrolls, and the major motifs — animals, birds, people and plants. The illustrator shows how these elements combine to produce a design as intricate as a decorated initial or as simple as a filled square or ornamental border.
