Indispensable for all savoury cooking. Bulbs can be red or white, harvested in late summer and eaten fresh or stored over winter. We have grown a number of varieties from sets mainly (e.g Red Baron), but recently from seed too (e.g Bedford Champion). Our damp soil can be a challenge, so we often mound-plant. No-dig approach has improved matters though.
Eaten raw and cooked
Watch closely for when to harvest (when leaves start to yellow) and lift very carefully to avoid damaging base and affecting storage. We usually have to dry under cover before storing due to our erratic weather.
Need to be kept weed free to bulk up well here.
